In plain words

A car key that breaks in the door or the ignition is handled with the same extraction tools, with one difference. On most vehicles the plastic head of the key carries the transponder chip and the remote buttons, and that half is usually intact in your hand. Once the blade is drawn out of the lock, a new blade can often be cut and fitted to the existing head, so the chip keeps talking to the car without reprogramming. The ignition wafers are checked for disturbance and the steering lock is confirmed free. Proof of ownership is asked for before work begins.

Sound familiar?

Overnight the deadbolt froze, and this morning the key would only turn partway. One more push and it sheared off flush with the face of the cylinder. There is nothing left to grip, and the cold is not helping.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

    The half in your hand

The bow and stub you are holding are worth a look before anything else. The cuts on it identify the key blank and give most of the bitting, so a replacement can be read straight from it and the fragment once they are side by side. Its condition tells a story too: thinning at the cuts, a slight bend, a crack line or a shiny worn tip all say the key was near the end of its life. The locksmith also asks about spares. A crisp spare, or the key code tag that came with the lock, is a better pattern for the new key than any worn copy.

  2. 2

Drawing it out with a hook extractor

Every keyway has grooves, called wards, that run along its length above and below the blade. A hook extractor is a slim strip of spring steel thin enough to ride in one of those grooves beside the fragment. The locksmith slides it in past the broken piece, rotates it slightly so the barbed tip catches a cut in the blade, and draws it back out in a straight line. The pins are lifted clear as the piece passes them, exactly as they are when a key is withdrawn. It is a patient, felt process, and the cylinder is untouched by it.

  3. 3

Habits that keep keys in one piece

A few small changes stop most repeat breaks. Push the key fully home before turning, and turn from the bow with a level hand, never with pliers or from the tip. Keep the house key off box-cutting and ice-scraping duty; every bend fatigues the blade at its narrowest cut. Replace a key the moment it shows a kink, a crack line or rounded cuts, and cut the replacement from code or a crisp original. Keep the ring light. If the lock itself starts to stiffen, that is the cue to lubricate or call, because a stiff lock is the one that breaks keys.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

Removing the cylinder to free it

A deep or bound fragment may need the cylinder taken off the door and the plug pushed out from behind on the bench. That disassembly and reassembly is quoted on its own.

  2. 2

    Vehicle key electronics

Fitting a new blade to a chip head, or moving the chip and remote into a new shell, is separate from the extraction and quoted as such, as is any ignition check.

  3. 3

    Door or strike adjustment

When the key broke because the bolt was binding in a swollen or sagging door, correcting hinges, strike or weatherstrip is offered and quoted as its own item.

Same fees day, night or weekend.

Broken Key Extraction: questions

Advice · (289) 306-0409

What should I do while I wait for the locksmith?

Put both halves of the key somewhere safe, note whether the door or vehicle is locked, and leave the keyway alone. If it is bitter cold, keep the storm door closed so the lock is not taking freezing rain. Have identification ready, or vehicle papers for a car. If the door is open, stay near it. That is all; the extraction goes smoother for a lock nobody has poked at.

Is a broken key a sign the whole lock is worn out?

Sometimes, and the visit answers it. A key that failed from its own fatigue in a clean, smooth cylinder says nothing against the lock. A key that broke because the pins were worn flat, the cap had loosened or the keyway was full of grit says the cylinder needs a service or a rekey. One that broke in a corroded, pitted plug is telling you the lock is due for replacement.

Will the lock work again once the piece is out?

In most cases yes, and it is tested in front of you with a key that fits. The inspection after extraction is where the honest answer lives: if the pins, springs and cap are sound and the keyway is clean, the cylinder goes back into service with a fresh key. If wear or damage caused the break, that is explained and a rekey or new cylinder is offered as a separate choice.

What the census means at the door

19%

Newer homes. About 19% of homes in Markham were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

New construction settles in its first years, and a door that closed perfectly at move-in can begin to catch as the frame finds its final position. A locksmith visiting a newer home adjusts strikes and hinges so the bolt throws freely again.

56%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Markham (2021 Census).

In a mixed area, a locksmith's advice bends to the building. For a house, the side door and garage entry get attention. For an apartment, the suite door's closer, strike and viewer do. The principle is the same: look at how the door is actually used.
