Seized & Jammed Lock Opening in Milliken

The shop's lever handle goes down as usual, but the latch inside the mortise case never pulls back. Staff are waiting on the sidewalk with their coffees, the door is locked, and the handle is simply moving air.

In plain words

This service has a season here. The first wet fortnight of winter sends meltwater into keyways that freezes overnight, and doors on the north and shaded sides of a building stay iced the longest. Salt spray from driveways and walkways leaves a crust that thickens with every thaw. Then summer humidity swells wood doors until the bolt drags in its pocket. A jammed lock opening in these conditions means thawing without boiling water, flushing out salt, drying the cylinder, and dressing it with a lubricant that sheds moisture, along with a check of the door so the same weather does not jam it again next month.

Sound familiar?

It is the coldest morning of the winter and the key goes halfway into the side door and stops. There is frost on the face of the cylinder, and the door on the shaded side of the house has done this before.

  1. 1

What the weather and the house have been doing

The last questions are about recent history. Has there been a thaw followed by a hard frost, or a stretch of humid days? Is this door on the shaded or windward side, or near a salted driveway? Was the door painted, re-hung, fitted with new weatherstripping or a storm door lately? Has anyone sprayed something into the keyway? Each answer changes the likely cause, and together they tell the locksmith whether this is a one-off, such as a freak freeze, or a lock that is going to keep doing this until the door or the lubrication habit is changed. The answers also shape the advice you leave with.

  2. 2

    Thawing ice and clearing salt

Ice is melted, never chipped. A lock de-icer or gentle warmth on the cylinder face turns the frozen meltwater back to liquid so it can drain, and the key is then worked until the plug turns. Boiling water is kept well away, because it refreezes inside and can crack cold brass. Salt crust is flushed out with contact cleaner and the plug is dried thoroughly before any lubricant goes in, since salt and moisture sealed under lubricant keep corroding. The cylinder is then dressed with the lubricant specified for that product, applied once everything is dry. If the weatherstrip has frozen to the door, that bond is released and the seal wiped.

  3. 3

A lock that turns with two fingers

You leave with a lock that operates the way it did when it was new: the key seats fully, the plug turns without a wiggle, the bolt throws and retracts through its whole travel, and the door closes and locks without a shoulder. The locksmith has cycled it from both sides and with every key, and has shown you where the trouble was, whether that was a gritty keyway, a broken tailpiece or a strike plate a few millimetres out. If you had a habit of lifting the door or pulling it toward you to lock it, that habit is now retired.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    How many locks are affected

One seized side door is the simplest case; a front and back door that both drag, or a storefront with two leaves, adds hardware and time to the visit.

  2. 2

Keying a new cylinder to your existing key

Pinning a replacement cylinder to the key already on your ring, or rekeying other doors to match a new key, is extra work per cylinder and simplest to do in the same visit.

  3. 3

Ice and salt on the day

A cylinder frozen solid or crusted with salt needs thawing, flushing and drying before it can even be diagnosed, and a winter call is quoted with that time in mind.

Same fees day, night or weekend.

Seized & Jammed Lock Opening: questions

Advice · (289) 306-0409

What should I tell you on the phone?

Say what the key does: refuses to turn, spins without effect, or works only when the door is pushed or pulled. Name the lock type if you can, whether it is a deadbolt, knob, lever or an old mortise lock, and which side of the building the door faces. Mention recent weather, any spray that went into the keyway, any other door you can use, and whether anyone is inside. That short list decides the tools that come.

My key turns all the way round but the bolt stays put. What has broken?

The key and cylinder are doing their job; the bar behind the cylinder that drives the bolt, called the tailpiece or cam, has broken, slipped or twisted out of engagement. It is a small part. The locksmith retracts the bolt through the mechanism or removes the cylinder to reach it, then fits a tailpiece of the right length and profile. Your cylinder and keys are unchanged afterwards.

My key is worn. Would a new copy have prevented this?

Possibly, if the key was part of the cause. A worn or bent key lifts the pins short of the shear line, so the plug binds even in a healthy cylinder, and a copy made from that key repeats the wear. A key cut from the code or from a crisp original is the fix. If the lock was also gritty or the door had moved, the new key would have eased things without settling them, which is why the locksmith checks all three.

What the census means at the door

19%

Newer homes. About 19% of homes in Markham were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

New construction settles in its first years, and a door that closed perfectly at move-in can begin to catch as the frame finds its final position. A locksmith visiting a newer home adjusts strikes and hinges so the bolt throws freely again.

56%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Markham (2021 Census).

In a mixed area, a locksmith's advice bends to the building. For a house, the side door and garage entry get attention. For an apartment, the suite door's closer, strike and viewer do. The principle is the same: look at how the door is actually used.
